My first introduction to Adenium was by my friend Upendra Mishra in 2015

Adenium plants, also known as desert roses or impala lilies, are fascinating and unique flowering plants that belong to the Apocynaceae family. Here are some key points about Adenium plants:

1. Appearance: Adenium plants are known for their striking, colorful flowers and thick, succulent stems. The flowers can come in various shades of pink, red, white, and even yellow. The leaves are glossy, oval-shaped, and typically green, although some varieties have variegated or patterned foliage.
2. Native Habitat: Adeniums are native to arid regions of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and parts of Asia. They are well-adapted to survive in hot and dry conditions, making them popular choices for xeriscaping and indoor cultivation.
3. Growth Habit: Adeniums are slow-growing shrubs that can reach a height of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet). They have a caudex, a swollen base or trunk, which stores water and nutrients to help the plant survive drought periods.
4. Flowering and Dormancy: Adeniums typically bloom during the warmer months, producing large, showy flowers that can last for several weeks. After the blooming period, they may enter a period of dormancy during which they shed their leaves. During dormancy, it’s important to reduce watering and provide cooler temperatures to mimic their natural environment.
5. Cultivation: Adeniums are commonly grown as container plants and can be cultivated indoors or outdoors, depending on the climate. They require well-draining soil, ample sunlight, and careful watering to prevent root rot. Regular fertilization and occasional pruning can help maintain their shape and promote healthy growth.
6. Propagation: Adeniums can be propagated from seeds or through stem cuttings. Seeds may take some time to germinate, while stem cuttings have a higher success rate and can produce plants identical to the parent plant.
7. Care and Maintenance: Adeniums require minimal maintenance but benefit from occasional pruning to shape the plant and remove dead or damaged branches. They are sensitive to cold temperatures and should be protected from frost. Regular monitoring for pests, such as aphids or spider mites, is essential.
